Tonya Jackson, Founder
Grandmother of 9 • Certified in Grandfamily Leadership • Data Management and Research Leader with 18 Years of Experience • Legacy Architect • Story, Life & Business Curator
Tonya Jackson founded Voices of Black Grandmothers in 2007, long before the stories, experiences and influence of today’s Black grandmothers were receiving the recognition they deserved. What began as a vision to create space for Black grandmothers to be heard has grown into a powerful community rooted in sisterhood, advocacy, storytelling, empowerment and legacy.
For nearly two decades, Tonya has dedicated her work to understanding and elevating the lived experiences of Black grandmothers—women who are caregivers, family historians, entrepreneurs, leaders, advocates and the architects of generations. Her years of community building and program development have given her a unique understanding of what women need not only to preserve their stories, but to continue creating meaningful lives of their own.
As a Legacy Architect, Tonya brings together her experience in leadership, business, storytelling and community building to help women recognize the significance of what they have lived and intentionally shape what comes next. Through Voices of Black Grandmothers and the storytelling vision of the Story & Legacy Center, she creates spaces where women can document their journeys, celebrate their accomplishments, preserve family history and transform lived experience into something future generations can inherit.
At the heart of Tonya’s work is a simple but powerful belief: a woman’s legacy is not only what she leaves behind—it is also how she chooses to live today.
Through Voices of Black Grandmothers, she is building more than a community. She is creating a living archive of Black grandmotherhood and a movement that ensures our stories are preserved, our lives are celebrated, our wisdom is valued and our legacies are seen.

Living Her Legacy brings Black grandmothers together through a combination of virtual programming, local connections, and select signature experiences.
Virtual Member Experiences
Members can connect from anywhere through virtual Coffee Chats, workshops, conversations, wellness experiences, book discussions, special presentations, and other member programming throughout the year.
Local & Chapter Experiences
In-person gatherings, meetups, outings, and special experiences may be offered through Voices of Black Grandmothers (VOBG) chapters and local communities. The type and frequency of local activities will vary based on location, chapter activity, member interest, and availability.
Signature Experiences
Members may also have opportunities to participate in select VOBG signature experiences, including special events, travel experiences, retreats, cultural outings, and the Annual Legacy Portrait. Some signature experiences may require separate registration and additional fees.
