Each year, Voices of Black Grandmothers brings women together for a professionally styled portrait experience that captures the beauty, strength, diversity and modern spirit of today’s Black grandmother.
Why we create the Legacy Portrait
The lens turns toward us.
For generations, Black grandmothers have been the keepers of family stories, culture, wisdom, traditions and resilience. Too often, our stories are remembered only through what we did for everyone else. The Legacy Portrait turns the lens toward us.
This annual portrait celebrates Black grandmothers as whole women—vibrant, stylish, accomplished, joyful, adventurous, creative, entrepreneurial, nurturing and still becoming. It creates a historical record of who we are in this moment and leaves a visual legacy for our children, grandchildren and future generations.
